Essure

ABOUT THE DEVICE

Developed, marketed and sold by Bayer AG, Essure is a permanent birth control system. According to the large pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturer the system is 99.83 percent effective in permanent birth control by creating scar tissue within a woman’s fallopian tubes to block eggs from dropping into the uterus. Hundreds of thousands of women have the Essure system implanted within their reproductive tract.

PURPOSE OF THE DEVICE

Essure is sold as a permanent birth control system with nearly perfect effectiveness without the use of hormones, chemicals, or drugs.

WARNINGS

ABC News conducted a special report that brought to light tens of thousands of complaints made by women who had the device inserted.

In 2015, after an extensive review of thousands of medical complaints and data, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel assigned to evaluate these matters issued patient safety advisories recommending that patients with nickel allergies and other uterine problems not use the device. The agency also urged doctors that inserted the device to get more training and provide more patient counseling. The FDA then went on to recommend the strictest warning label a prescription drug can have, known in the industry as a black box warning.

SAFETY ISSUES

Thousands of women claim that the device is not safe or effective, contrary to the manufacturer's marketing materials. Some of the side effects these women have suffered include allergic reactions to the nickel-based internal metal coil and headaches. More dangerous injuries include perforation of internal organs, nerve damage, intense pain, bleeding, cramps, surgical intervention and the inability to have sexual intercourse.

Most troublesome, deaths of both women with the device and their unborn fetuses have been reported and linked to Essure.
